Forests are becoming more critical than ever for the global ecosystem and human well-being. To underpin this modern-day reality, numerous books and articles have made compelling reading, spelling out the various benefits of verdant woodland and forestry. These green areas are unique; we could not survive without them. Occasionally referred to as the lungs of the planet because they absorb carbon dioxide, approximately 30 per cent of the surface of the earth is forested – equivalent to some four billion hectares.

Equally significantly, woods and forests are a haven for animal and plant species, some of which are quite rare. In contrast, however, these wooded areas also represent a valuable source of raw materials. As a result, in several locations – probably too many – it has not yet been possible to stop or adequately limit the progressive destruction and degradation of large swathes of tree-lined land.

At the same time, in reports from tropical regions, we bear witness to deep poverty, a factor that leads to regional exploitation of land. While Western society rejects deforestation, at least in theory, it is nonetheless somewhat entangled with these unsustainable policies – and, by implication, the stripping of natural resources. Furthermore, weak governance and financial attraction bring about the large-scale conversion of natural forest for agricultural purposes such as keeping cattle or feeding the worldwide demand for soybean and palm oil, among other products.
